My Forever Family!

Posted by Lucy The English Pointer on August 5, 2011

Look at my new playmates!

As you read this I’ll be on my way to Louisiana with my new Forever Family. Foster Mom took a couple of photos to show everyone my new pack. Not only do I have a couple of really cool human sisters to shower me with praise and attention, I also have a new canine playmate, Sky who is just a little older than me and will show me the ropes around my new home. I can’t imagine being any happier than I am now, but I know there’s more to come now that I have a family that will love me as much as I love them. I mean, think about it…they drove 5 hours one way in 100 degree weather to meet me and I can honestly say it was love at first sight.

Don't I have the best looking pack you've ever seen?

Thank you to everyone that helped me out in the last few weeks. Without all of you I would never have found such a great family to call my own. Oh, and tell Simon he can have all his toys back because I’ve got a pile of my own waiting for me in Louisiana!

Come on girls, let's snuggle. It's a long drive home but I can't wait!

Before and After

Posted by Lucy The English Pointer on August 5, 2011

You know I said I didn’t like toys, and then I did like some toys but still not enough to play with them for longer than 30 seconds?  Well, this morning I discovered the joy of stuffed toys!  The joy was actually in the unstuffing of the toy.  Simon’s “friends” consist of all sorts of creatures but his little fuzzy round sheep was the one that caught my eye this morning.  For some reason I just had to have it.  First I just brought it to my bed and looked at it.

Isn't this a nice looking sheep?

It was just too tempting.  As Simon was laying on the carpet in front of me, I lost my mind and spun into a magical world where stitches rip, stuffing is fun to pull apart and a squeaker must cease to be.  I was quite proud of my accomplishment.  Simon looked a bit distraught afterwards but he has dozens of toys so I’m sure he won’t miss this one.  He did take the fabric carcass to his own bed and just look at it with pity.

What? Is there a problem?

Foster Mom said it was ok to play with and destroy Simon’s sheep.  She actually even took it away from me a couple of times just to make sure I wasn’t crazy and guarding it as my own.  She’s always testing me.  I think Foster Mom can be very high maintenance sometimes.  She needs to just chill and let me be a puppy for a while.

I’m So Cute

Posted by Lucy The English Pointer on August 4, 2011

How could you be mad at me? I'm so cute!

Just look at that picture!  Am I not the most adorable puppy you’ve ever seen?  I was definitely mugging for the camera on this one because I was sort of in trouble.  Foster Mom made the mistake of letting me off my leash (oh sweet freedom!) in the backyard if I promised to be calm and not run around.  Sure Foster Mom, no problem, I’ll be really good (paws crossed behind my tail).  She’s so trusting.  I was good for about 2 minutes and then I needed to give the old legs a little stretch so I started to trot off in the direction of a tree with a bird in it until Foster Mom called me back.  Stupid me, I turned around and went right back to her.  How does she have such power over me?  Simon doesn’t do anything she says.  After my limited exercise it was time for a pre-evening nap!

Can't get away from the paparazzi around here for some shut-eye.

Caught in the Act

Posted by Lucy The English Pointer on August 3, 2011

I don’t have many possessions. A bed, bowl, towels and a blanket, and my t-shirt and sock toys. Foster Mom bought me a couple of things to play with but I’m just not really into it. Just because I don’t want my toys NOW doesn’t mean I won’t want them LATER. I keep thinking my stuff is magically disappearing because I’ll go in my crate every now and then and it’s empty except for my bedding and water. Today I was clever. I caught Simon in the act of breaking and entering…my crate! Ha!

Look at Simon...the nerve!

While I was outside doing what I do outside, HE was waiting for the all-clear and then just helped himself to my things. What a thief. I don’t steal his toys so why does he want mine? The fact that I’m not at all interested in his toys doesn’t really matter. I think I’ll have to stand guard for a while to make sure he doesn’t do it again. Honestly, Foster Brothers are so much trouble sometimes.

I'm on guard now. You shall not pass.

Kitchen Dog

Posted by Lucy The English Pointer on August 2, 2011

I love to eat.  I love to smell what’s cooking in the kitchen, provided Foster Mom is actually cooking something.  I’m still a skinny guy and I love food…what can I say?  Foster Mom says she doesn’t like to cook during the summer because it’s so hot.  Tonight was an exception.  Since she so rarely cooks, she’s very rusty and needs my expert advice to put the finishing touches on her complicated recipes.  Enter, Kitchen Dog, to save the day!  I am very polite and don’t put my paws or nose on the counters but I try to make sure I am under foot every time Foster Mom turns around so she knows I’m there to help.  I’m not any kind of culinary expert, so I’m not sure what type of help she wants when she keeps saying “Buster, MOVE”.

Don't forget you have stuff cooking on the stove!

I Do Like Some Toys

Posted by Lucy The English Pointer on August 1, 2011

I know Foster Mom says I don’t play with toys, but I do enjoy an ocassional chew on something other than a pigs hoof.  After telling Foster Mom this, she went into the clothing donation pile and pulled out these great purple soccer socks.  I dug into those right away and starting pulling out stitches.  Then she made two more toys for me out of an old t-shirt.  I’d rather have another dog to play with, but since I CAN’T DO ANYTHING right now (am I making my point?), hand-me-down clothes will have to do.

My new socks!

Simon and I did get a good half hour with the chew hooves, though, and that was great fun.  I really wanted his bed but had to be relegated to the floor until he moved on his own.  He’s not that thrilled when I just walk on top of him and try to sit on him to get him to move.  He says I’m an annoying little puppy sometimes.  I think he’s a boring old guy most times.  I guess we’re even.

We're a couple of hard-chewing hounds.

Hey, I Can Bark!

Posted by Lucy The English Pointer on July 31, 2011

I’ve been pretty quiet since I’ve been here.  A little whining now and then while I got used to the routine, but never barked.  Well today I found my inner bark and let me tell you it came out in a big way.  Foster Mom and Dad had some friends over for dinner tonight.  Since it was hot out and I am on restricted activity (I’ll get to that later), I was left indoors, inside in my crate and Simon was on his bed across from me.  While Simon was catching some shut-eye (he’s old, he sleeps a lot), I was tuning up my voice.  I started with some really high-pitched stuff just to loosen the vocal chords and then went into full-bark-mode.  I was not going to leave anyone in any doubt about how I felt about being left out of the party.  I mean really…how can you have a party without the ultimate Party Animal?  I’ve never seen Foster Mom so annoyed.  I admit I was a bit loud, but if they’d just let be me outside with the rest of the gang I would have been fine.  The problem…I’m not getting my usual amount of exercise.  The solution…let me do what I want all the time!  Ok, maybe that won’t be a popular choice among my Foster Parents.  They are very adamant on this whole keep-him-quiet-thing due to heartworm treatment.  I thought I could handle the leash, the confinement, etc, but it’s a lot harder than I thought it would be.  Foster Mom said I might need something to take away some of my anxiety while I’m on crate-rest.  She said she’d talk to me tomorrow about it so we’ll see what happens.

Every time I’m asleep I have dreams about running around the yard for hours and never tiring out.  Another few weeks and I’ll have my active life back.  I was a much happier guy when I could run and play and chase things.  I know, patience.  I’m trying, really I am, but it’s hard.

Pool party? Did my invitation get lost?

Looking Up

Posted by Lucy The English Pointer on July 31, 2011

I’ve spent a lot of the morning already doing just one thing…looking up at the trees.  There are two of the most annoying squirrels playing in our yard.  They’re jumping from limb to limb chasing each other and chattering up a storm.  I’m sure as Simon and I follow them all along the back fence, they are mocking us in Modern Squirrel Language.  It’s not one of the Romance Languages, that’s for sure.  It’s more guttural and I’m sure what they’re saying translates as, “ha, ha…you can’t catch us!”  I managed to get a photo of one of the elusive creatures.

The Target

There are so many trees along the back fence they can just jump from place to place without ever hitting the ground.   It’s very frustrating, and being on the leash in the backyard isn’t helping matters either.  This is what we have spent our morning doing…looking up!

Hey, they're throwing stuff at us!

They’re up there!
